Local Colours: Walthamstow.

A series of workshops held
at Walthamstow FC for local children (and adults) to
design flags that celebrate
the local area.

Getting lots of ideas down fast.

We started by introducing the idea of flags and asking the kids to think about their purpose and what makes a really good one. Then we talked about the local area and we shared some local knowledge about our culture, history and wildlife. The kids then started to get ideas down for flags that celebrate what they love about Walthamstow.

We provided elements to use.

Once they had an idea they were happy with we helped them develop it further, giving them a palette of elements to work. You could also go ahead and construct your own elements.

Being black and white about things.

We worked in black and white to enable the designs to be scanned in and scaled up easily. This also enabled us to recolour the designs easily and ensure a consistent palette. Those taking part added notes to their designs to make their colours choices clear.

Here are some of the designs.

Now we just have to make them.

The idea is that all flags will get made and then displayed in the stands, creating a lovely set of connections between club and community.
