Details

How long does it take?
2 hours

What’s the purpose?
To create designs for bunting that celebrate the local area, helping to connect people to their neighbourhood and each other.

Who is it for?
Works great for year 5 and 6 kids, but can work for younger kids too if there’s plenty of help on hand.

What is the project?

Waltham Forest Council wanted to print bunting to help celebrate the Jubilee, using it at the Town Hall and at street parties across the borough. They wanted local kids to come up with the designs. Wood Street Walls coordinated the project and brought us in to run the workshops in 6 local school.

How did it work?

We ran a 2 hour workshop in each school, each with a class of 30 kids. We started with a warm up to get them in the right frame of mind. We followed this with an introduction to ourselves and the project. They started to develop their designs as thumbnails and in small groups, so they could talk through their ideas and collaborate. We asked them to focus on the local area and to visualise what they love about it – whether that’s food, people, places or activities – or something we hadn’t thought of.

“Thank you for a great workshop, the kids really enjoyed it.”

— Joanne Laing, Class Teacher at Mission Grove Primary
